Toni Pollard

Toni Pollard has been a teacher of Indonesian in Australia for over 40 years, both at high school and university level. A NAATI qualified translator of Indonesian to English since 1993, Toni has taken up literary translation since her retirement from the University of Western Sydney at the end of 2004. The novel, Mirah of Banda by Hanna Rambe is her first major translation published in 2010 by Lontar Foundation in its Modern Library of Indonesia. Two short stories for Menagerie 8 are awaiting publication by Lontar. Her translation of Putu Oka Sukanta’s novella, Above the Day, Below the Night also came out in 2010. Since 2008 Toni has been a regular contributor to the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival’s bilingual publication, funded by Hivos, which showcases short stories, extracts from novels and poems by young Indonesian writers attending the annual event. Her current project, also for Lontar, is the translation of Nh. Dini’s 1977 novel, Departures.
