Dalang Jemblung

Dalang Jemblung is a form of Javanese folk theater performed by one to six actors. One of the actors sings Javanese chants, while the others play the gamelan. The stories are based on legends or history related to the social problems of the present day.

Dalang Jemblung is considered a “social drama” because its main purpose is to communicate directly to the people. The plots are simple and light. The actors are more flexible in their approach to telling the story, as opposed to the more rigidly constructed approach of other wayang (Javanese opera) performances. A Dalang Jemblung performance can be carried out in any place, and the duration of each performance can be as short as ten minutes or as lengthy as all night long.
