Ugrasena

Raden Ugrasena is the younger brother of King Basudewa of Madura. Because of his magical strength he is able to defeat the demon invaders of Suralaya and the gods award him a heavenly nymph, Dewi Wresni, for his wife.*) He thereafter rules in the kingdom of Lesanpura with the title King Setyajid.

Raden Ugrasena has kedondongan eyes, a refined nose and mouth and a moustache and beard. His hair is worn in the gembel knot and he wears a diadem with the garuda ornament in back as well as the waderan ear ornaments. A portion of his hair hangs down over his shoulders. He wears the kalung putera necklace, bracelets, armbands and anklets. He wears the kerajaan lengkap dress.

*)In ancient times [literally, the purwa age], it was common for a nobleman-warrior to obtain a wife by fulfilling the particular demands made by the prospective bride. Often he might marry her only on the precondition that he and the other suitors do battle among themselves, the bride going to the victor. There is also the rather unusual request of Dewi Erawati of Mandraka that the bridal couple be accompanied by forty of the most beautiful bridesmaids; or Dewi Sumbadra’s request upon her marriage to Arjuna that he produce a wild water buffalo (danu), etc.
