Watugunung

Prabu Watugunung is the king of Gilingwesi. He is the son of Prabu Palindriya and Dewi Sinta. While he is still in the womb his mother goes into exile when the King takes Sinta’s own sister as his co-wife.

In her exile in the middle of the forest, she bears her child whom she names Raden Wudug. When he is still a young child he is reprimanded by his mother who strikes him with a rice ladle leaving a scar on the back of the neck. He runs away from his mother and changes his name to Raden Radite.

Raden Radite, possessed of extraordinary supernatural power, eventually becomes King in gilingwesi, with the title Watugunung. he is married to a princess who is much in love with him; but it turns out–unknown to all concerned–that his queen is in fact his own mother. the queen realizes what has happened when one day while she is delousing him she notices a scar on his neck. He recounts the origin of the scar and she realizes with horror what has happened. She urges him to seek a widadari [heavenly nymph] to take as his second wife (madu). He sets off for the abode of the gods, Suralaya, to request the hand of a widadari. His request is refused and a war ensues in which Prabu Watugunung is eventually killed. This is indeed what his mother/wife had hoped for.

Prabu Watugunung has jaitang eyes and a pointed nose. He wears the crown of a king, a three-tiered diadem with the garuda ornament in back as well as the praba, the wing-like shoulder ornaments normally worn only by kings and kesatria. He wears bracelets, armbands and anklets. His dress is the kerajaan lengkap.
