Smoke Panache of Semeru Volcano

Mount Semeru is the highest volcanic peak (3,676 meters) in Indonesia. This hand-painted color photograph was taken by Onnes Kurkdjian, an Armenian photographer born in 1851 in Russia, and who died in 1903 in Surabaya, where he had lived 20 years. Best known as a portrait photographer, Kurkdjian also took many photographs of natural scenes. This postcard was never sent through the mail.
