Raden Gatutkaca is the second son of Raden Wrekudara; his mother is a raksasa, Dewi Arimbi of Pringgadani. Gatutkaca is born a raksasa. Because of his magical power there is no implement sharp enough to sever his umbilical cord. Eventually the sacred weapon of Raden Karna, called “Kyai Kunta”, is successfully used, but in the process the arrow’s sheath magically enters Gatutkaca’s body, adding to his supernatural power.

By order of the gods the infant Gatutkaca is transformed and invested with all manner of magic properties: he has muscles of wire, bones of iron, bold as thick as resin. He can fly though the air as fast as lightning and sit on clouds. He can effortlessly break the neck of any enemy at will.

In the Baratayuda, Gatukaca meets his end when he is struck by Karna’s weapon, Kyai Kunta. Gatutkaca is hiding in the clouds, invisible, when Karna unleashes the magic arrow which strikes Gatutkaca in the navel. The weapon–which had been used to sever Gatutkaca’s umbilical cord–returns to its sheath which had earlier magically entered Gatutkaca’s body. Gatutkaca’s body falls to the ground onto Karna’s chariot smashing it to pieces. Gatutkaca is very young when he dies and his loss is sorely grieved by all his family.

Gatutkaca has telengan eyes; his nose is long and broad; he wears a beard and moustache. He wears the three-tiered diadem and waderan era ornaments. His hair is tied in the kadal-menek knot with the garuda ornament in back. He wears the royal shoulder ornament, praba, the ulur-ulur necklace, bracelets, anklets and arm bands. He wears the kerajaan lengkap dress.
