Surya

Betara Surya (“surya” means sun) is the sun god and the son of Semar (Hyang Ismaya). His duty is to oversee the daily affairs of man on earth. One day he comes to meet a young maiden in the country of Petaperlaya. She bears him a son, Raden Suryaputra, who is adopted by by another king.

When the Baratayuda is about to break out, Betara Surya comes before the angry Prabu Kresna. Betara Surya tells him, “Prabu Kresna, calm yourself. Your wish to eliminate the Kurawas will be fulfilled. Remember that fate will take its course.”

Betara Surya has jaitan eyes, a prominent nose and an upturned head. He has a thin, high voice. He wears a beard. He wears the long jacket of a deity, waderan ear ornaments, slendang [shawl] and shoes. He carries a keris in the front of his waistband.
