Sang Hyang Bayu, son of Betara Buru, is the god of wind and is capable of instantly destroying all the contents of the universe with his wind. The particular characteristics which distinguish him as the god of wind (and also his descendants) are the poleng [cloth with black, red, white and yellow checks], the long thumbnail (kuku pancanaka) and a poultice on the forehead (pupuk). Hyang Bayu has several relations who also possess the magic power of wind: Sang Hanuaman, Wrekudara (Bratasena), Wil Jajahwreka, Begawan Maenaka, Liman Satubanda (Gajah Sena). These five are always accompanied by a raging wind, and they proceed with great speed.

Hyang Bayu has telengan eyes, a large, flat nose [dempak], and kuku pancanaka [long thumbnails]. He wears a crown, a threetiered diadem, waderan ear ornaments, a pupuk [poultice] on his forehead and the poleng dress. The last three indicate that he has the magical power of wind.
Hyang Bayu is the personal god of Wrekudara, and indeed the latter is also referred to as Bayusuta because he is considered the adopted son of Hyang Bayu. Anoman, the white monkey warrior, is also his adopted son and wears the poleng dress.
