Raden Kangsa is the son of the ogre-king Prabu Gorawangsa. This king, by disguising himself as Prabu Basudewa, had deceived Basudewa’s queen, Dewi Maerah, and Raden Kangsa is the result of their illicit union.

When the king learns that his queen is pregnant, he exiles her to the forest where she is watched over by the ogre Suratimantra, a follower of Prabu Gorawangsa. The infant Kangsa is reared by Suratimantra and when he comes of age he proceeds to Madura to claim the kingdom as his own. Because of his superhuman powers, Kangsa’s claim is granted. Kangsa is able to defeat the other children of Basudewa, Kakrasana and Narayana, and they are sent into exile. Kangsa, attempting to discover their hiding place and to kill them, stages a tourney with Suratimantra as his champion. The second Pandawa brother, Bratasena, disguised as Jagalabilawa, enters the arena and kills Suratimantra in the duel.

Kangsa has white, bulging eyes (plelengan putih), a large, flat nose and protruding fangs which indicate his raksasa origins. He wears the three-tiered diadem and the waderan ear ornaments. He hair is tied in the kadal-menek knot, with a garuda in back and a portion of his hair hanging free in the gimbal manner, a sign that he is also a kesateria.
