A Mosque in Palembang

This card was produced in Palembang, South Sumatra, by the photographer, M.A Jamato, who practiced his profession there from 1925 until about 1935. This mosque, Mesjid Agung, was built in 1740 by Sultan Machmud Badaruddin I. Recently, it has been considerably enlarged and restored. Between the mosque and the Musi River stand the Sultan’s palace and the Dutch fort, which overlie habitation sites dating back to the Buddhist Srivijayan empire (seventh century). The photograph was taken from the east
