Gareng is the son of Semar and is the result of Semar’s prayers. “Nalagareng” means “with a dried up heart”, because he is clumsy at speaking, inevitably mistaken in what he says, and yet unwilling to admit his mistakes.

It happens once that Dewi Sumbadra–in disguise in the country of Paranggumiwang–has Gareng made king in that country. But petruk, Gareng’s brother, finds the latter out, and he turns back into the ordinary Gareng.

Gareng, Petruk and their father, Semar, are inseparable and always accompany Arjuna and his sons.

Gareng is wall-eyed and his nose is globular. He wears a necklace and the typical dress of a clown–rapekan lawak. His arms are crippled and bent at the elbow and his front leg is crippled and ulcerous from yaws. He wears a pigtail on the crown of his head. he carries a keris.
