Sundanese Women

This card was produced by Tio Tek Hong,. The bed or divan, the fan and the lady's posed availability formed a popular subject for cards at the beginning of this century. This woman may possibility have been a nyai, or concubine. Bandung, in the Priangan Regency, was often referred to as the "Paris of Java," and here, by extension, its ladies are compared to Parisiennes. The woman wears a cotton baju kabaya held closed by two pins and a brooch, which was often made of silver.
