Prabu Salya is the king of Mandraka. He is known as Narasoma in his youth and is the son of Prabu Mandrapati. His queen is Dewi Setyawati [setya = loyal] who is extremely loyal to her husband.

In his heart Salya truly cherishes the Pandawa brothers, but because Mandraka is under the suzerainty of Astina and because the King of Astina is his son-in-law, Salya is forced to side with Astina. When the Baratayuda breaks out, Prabu Salya is plagued by doubt and anxiety. Though outwardly he displays great affection for his son-in-law, suyudana, king of Astina, deep down he really favors the Pandawas–out of filial piety for his own nephews and out of real love for them. Thus he cannot firmly decide one way or the other and when the battle begins, he is listless, without his usual supernatural strength; he battles with no enthusiasm as though allowing himself to be killed. This is the fate of one who is only half-hearted, who has no self-assurance, who does not respect the honor of the crown of leadership–all because of the gnawing affection which he bears for his own nephews, Nakula and Sadewa.

During the Baratayuda, when Salya is driving Adipati Karna’s chariot in pursuit of Arjuna, Salya slyly jerks the chariot at the moment that Karna shoots his arrow at Arjuna, causing it to go wide of its mark. Prabu Salya is killed by Prabu Yudistira in the great war.

Prabu Salya is fortunate in having three daughters who all become queens: 1) Dewi Erawati, queen of Prabu Baladewa of Madura; 2) Dewi Surtikanti, queen of the king of Awangga, Adipati Karna; 3) Dewi Banowati, the queen of Prabu Suyudana of Astina.

Prabu Salya has kedondongan eyes and a pointed nose. He wears a three-tiered diadem with the large garuda ornament in back. He wears the waderan ear ornaments and the royal back-wing shoulder ornament, praba. He wears the ulur-ulur necklace, as well as armbands, anklets and bracelets. He wears the bokongan raton dress.
