Mak Yong is a Malay-Riau theater art featuring dances, songs, and comedy that are interconnected into a story plot. The actors wear masks, while the actresses wear glamorous dancing costumes.
To the Malay people, Mak Yong functions as entertainment because the stories performed are delivered in a comedic manner accompanied with joyful songs.
In the old days, a Mak Yong performance could go on for five consecutive days. Now each performance is about three hours long.
