Bambang Irawan is the son of Arjuna and Dewi Ulupi (daughter of the hermit Resi Kanwa of Mount Yasarata). Irawan usually stays with his mother at his grandfather’s hermitage, only descending to the kingdom of the Pandawas when his presence is required. Because of his supernatural power he is made a king and given the title Prabu Gambiranom. He inherits the sacred arrow of Arjuna, Kyai Ardadedali which adds to his already considerable magic power.

Later as Irawan is on his way to the field of battle during the Baratayuda, he comes across a raksasa king, Kalasrenggi; both raksasa and kesateria die in the ensuing duel. Irawan’s death is cuase of great mourning on the Pandawa side, especially since he is sorely missed on the field of battle.

Bambang Irawan has jaitan eyes and a prominent nose. His hair is worn in the kadal menek knot. He wears the sekar kluwih ear ornament and bulan sabit necklace. He wear bracelets, anklets and armbands. He wears woven-silk trousers (cinde) and the katongan dress. The puppet used for Irawan as Prabu Gambiranom is the same as that used for all foreign kings of refined (alus) body shape (Raja sabrang bagus) Irawan is married to Prabu Kresna’s daughter, Dewi Titisari.
